As the middle-size market continues to struggle, megayachts have had yet another explosive year, pushing new limits for the industry and leading some yards to thrive.  The world now has 53 yachts over 100 meters, more than double the amount in the fleet 10 years ago. Whilst the Middle East and Russia have remained active in the range, the addition of buyers from the US to the megayacht range has led the space to new heights.

Yacht Harbour looks at the largest yachts delivered in 2019 and what you need to know about them.

#1 Flying Fox



Length: 136m 

YardLurssen 

The largest yacht delivered by Lurssen this year, Flying Fox also became the most massive yacht to enter the charter market. Stretching across 136 meters, the yacht’s exterior was designed by Espen Oeino, often involved with large Lurssen builds. Onboard, Flying Fox features 11 cabins with sea view terraces, a 400 square meter spa spread over 2 floors, a 12-meter long swimming pool, a dive center and 2 helipads, all serviced by a crew of 24.

#2 TIS



Length: 109m 

Yard: Lurssen 

The largest yacht ever displayed at the Monaco Yacht Show, Tis wowed prospective buyers with her one of a kind interior inspired by Parisian palaces and designed by Andrew Winch. The 109-meter long Lurssen was put on the market shortly prior to her delivery  and is currently looking for a new owner at a $250 million price tag. 

Meanwhile Tis is available for charter at $2.2 million per week. On top of the helipads, swimming pool, spa, gym and luxurious staterooms, arguably one of the most unique amenities onboard is a main salon spread across 2 levels with a grand staircase.

#3 IJE 



Length: 108m 

Yard: Benetti

A transformational build for Benetti, the Italian yacht manufacturing behemoth, IJE  became 1 of 3 yachts over 100 meters built by the yard in 2019. Delivered to Australian billionaire James Packer, the yacht became his latest flagship following Arctic P. Crafted in traditional Benetti style on the exterior, not much is known about the yacht’s interior. 

IJE and its new generation of Benettis did however put the yard into the competition for more 100-meter plus new builds as an increasing number of yards begins to compete for the segment.

#4 Lana 



Length: 107m 

Yard: Benetti 

The first mega Benetti to be delivered, the 107-meter was built as hull FB 277 and was since named Lana. With its construction overseen by Imperial Yachts, online commentary has been speculating its owner to be from Russia. 

Little is known about the ship, other than its distinctive exterior look. At the time of her launch, it was teased the yacht would later be made available for charter, in what is a growing trend among megayachts.

#5 Zoza 



Length: 105m 

Yard: Benetti 

Rounding up the ranks of the 50 largest yachts in the world, Zoza was launched in 2019 for a Middle Eastern owner according to social media. Primarily differentiating itself from other megayachts with tall panoramic windows, the yacht is likely to remain private and off the charter market.

#6 Madsummer



Length: 95 meters 

Yard: Lurssen  

Built by the German shipyard Lurssen, in what has proven to be their size range with the highest resale value thanks to strong demand on the buy size, Madsummer was delivered earlier this year. 

Indicative of the growing influence of American influence in the size range, Madsummer was built for experienced yacht owner Jeffrey Soffer active in Florida real estate.

#7  Lady S 



Length: 93m

Yard: Feadship 

A surprising player in the megayacht sector is LVMH. Following their purchase of the Feadship Royal Van Lent yard nearly a decade ago have grown their influence over the space and maintained Feadship’s reputation in the megayacht sector. 

Built for Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, Lady S was designed by Michael Leach. Perhaps the most innovative feature onboard the American billionaire’s yacht is an IMAX cinema.

#8 DreAMBoat 



Length: 90m 

Yard: Oceanco 

In the fight for supremacy over the megayacht market a rapidly gaining player has become the Dutch-based Oceanco, whose most recent megayacht became DreAMBoat following hallmark projects like Jubilee and Black Pearl. 

Another example of Americans’ increasing presence, the 90-meter was built for Home Depot co-founder Arthur M. Blank. The capitalization in the yacht’s name being a clever play on the billionaire’s initials AMB.

#9 Bold 



Length: 85m 

Yard: Silver Yachts 

One of the most unusual yachts on the water, its story begins with a bet to build fast, long yachts in Australia, which Guido Krass made when setting up Hanseatic Marine. Since renamed to Silver Yachts and now owned by a Chinese aluminium producer, the yard has built 5 yachts, the latest of which is Bold. 

It’s most unusual feature is the vast lounge deck with full panoramic windows overlooking a large helipad aft of the main deck. Stretching over 85-meters the yacht is the reflection of a growing desire to explore from a new generation of owners.

#10 Excellence 



Length: 80m 

Yard: Abeking & Rasmussen

Built for serial yacht owner Herb Chambers, the 80-meter yacht becomes his latest flagship built by German yard Abeking & Rasmussen and 3rd new build with that particular yard. Created with an instantly recognisable look, the yacht is now available for charter. 

Amongst her key features is a 3-storey tall atrium with panoramic windows. Chambers’ previous yachts were also named Excellence and proved to be successful charter vessels. His former flagship, Excellence V was sold in May asking €69.5 million. His prior 78-meter Abeking&Rasmussen was however sold to a Russian billionaire even prior to her delivery, now known as Eminence.

#11 Dragon 



Length: 80m 

Yard: Columbus 

Whilst Dutch, German and Italian yards have been competing for the megayacht market, Palumbo Superyachts, an Italian company, has been quietly amassing a leadership position in refits and expanding into new builds acquiring ISA Yachts and now managing to deliver an 80-meter yacht through their Columbus brand. 

Dragon becomes the largest yacht built by Palumbo Superyachts. With all of the amenities one would expect of a yacht this size like a 7-meter swimming pool, beach club and vast staterooms, the yacht is a clear statement to the Italian group’s expansion on the scene.

Flying Fox: Inside the largest charter superyacht
Flying Fox, the 136-meter Lurssen superyacht is ready to set new standards for what's possible to get on charters. 14th largest yacht in the world, she was designed by Espen Oeino and Mark Berryman with Imperial overseeing the construction. The curved lines of the hull and an unusual shade of gray, which the eminent Espen Oino used in the exterior design, make it possible to talk about Flying Fox as a truly unique, unique yacht. Flying Fox meets PYC standards. Comfortable and spacious living spaces feature smart design. Luxurious modern interiors by Mark Berryman include 11 cabins with sea terraces for 22 passengers. At the request of guests, rooms for staff are provided.The vessel’s main interior area, a spacious two-floor saloon, lies on the bridge deck, fitted with wood fireplace, dining table for 22 people and a cinema. The superyacht compliant with PYC can accommodate up to 22 guests across 11 staterooms, along with a crew of 54. For the comfort of her guests, Flying Fox features a 400 square metre spa spread across two floors. The zone comes with a hammam, sauna, massage area, gym and cryo sauna. Dominator 42m: The mini-explorer with transatlantic range
Currently under development at Dominator Yachts, the 42M Illumen will become the yard's flagship and first yacht of its series with transatlantic range. Other unusual options for this series include the option of a helipad on its bow.The Dominator 42M is now being built for a German client. “He wanted each area to represent different countries and continents,” says Pernsteiner. “For instance, the flybridge has a Middle Eastern theme, with a relaxing ambience and even a hookah lounge.” And the main deck resembles a modern, loft-style penthouse in the heart of New York City.The upper deck is Asian-style and designed for a detox zone and lifestyle, complete with a yoga studio, gym, smoothie bar and spacious windows for endless ocean views.Large glass walls and windows, modern decor and an office - the owner plans to spend a lot of time on board the yacht and equipped it with a teleconference screen, printers, scanners, etc. - it resembles a modern loft-style penthouse in the heart of Manhattan, but in the middle of the sea .One of the most unique features will be a fully integrated glass shower next to the owner's bed. Zero Emission Concept SY200 by Philippe Briand
Innovations in megayacht eco-design seem endless. One of the first designers to take a step forward in this direction in 2020 was a marine engineer, Philip Briand. From the headquarters of his studio in London, he presents the concept of sailing in superyachts, which puts zero-emission navigation at the center of all decisions.The latest concept from the French designer appeared after he was motivated to create a “zero-emission yacht”. This is the second concept from the new Briand family of self-contained yachts, which is on the heels of the 90-meter SY300. Briand previously described the SY200 as the "younger sister" of the SY300.The SY200 will travel in two ways: boat sails and underwater turbines, with which it will collect electricity for the 20 batteries that it will carry in its hold.According to Briand, the length of the yacht is 75 meters, and the sail is 2,000 meters, it generates more than 2,000 kW at maximum speed. To do this, he designed a helmet inspired by high-class, shorter sailboats. In particular, he emphasizes his inverted nose and central glass capsule.Ketch is equipped with a carbon fiber mast and rigging, as well as the same modern hull and upturned nose as the SY 300. Briand estimates the power of the yacht is 500 kW when sailing at a speed of 15 knots and 200 kW at a power of 12 knots."I believe we need to embrace ‘lateral thinking’ when it comes to the future of sailing yacht design. Oyster's founder Matthews returns to its board
Richard Matthews, original founder of Oyster Yachts, has returned to its board as a non-executive director. This follows Richard Hadida buying the company in 2018. Matthews had founded the sailing yacht manufacturer back in 1973.Oyster Yachts built its first 32ft sailing boat in 1973. From there it gradually extended its range of sailing yachts finding its sweet spot in 56ft to 125ft units designed by Robert Humphreys. In 2008 the company was sold to private equity firm Balmoral Capital for £70 million, before the firm disposed of it to HTP Investments for £15 million in 2012.Following a failure of the internal hull structure on Polina Star III, an Oyster 825 model, which led to the yacht sinking in 2015. This led to a recall of 4 other units and a dent in the builder's cash flow despite a £83 million order book in 2017. The following year, the company went into administration, before being purchased by Richard Hadida.Hadida is mostly known for founding Evolution Gaming, a company that powers most online casino games and currently trades on the Swedish stock market with a market cap of near €5 billion. His fried, yacht owner and automotive mogul Eddie Jordan was formerly also involved in the takeover bid with Oyster but later backed out."It is hugely important to me personally that the founder of the brand [Richard Matthews] I hold so close to my heart has given it his seal of approval by joining our board." Hadida explained. "Having restored the company to its former glory with the support of a fantastic team – from talented craftsmen to dedicated management – this feels like confirmation that Oyster is once again synonymous with quality and excellence, just as it was when Richard founded it back in 1973".
The New Grand Soleil 44 presented on Boot
Yesterday, at the Boot exhibition in Dusseldorf, Il Cantiere del Pardo presented the new Grand Soleil 44 Performance. This is a project of Matteo Polly, the best designer in the offshore sector, rated, which is designed to become a reference boat in the racing sector ORC. The new Cantiere del Pardo challenge is called Grand Soleil 44.
