The 142.8m S/Y A, largest private sailing yacht in the world which recently left Nobiskrug, the shipyard it was built at, has now been seized in Gibraltar following a €15,3 million claim filled by Nobiskrug.
The sailing yacht arrived in Gibraltar just a few days ago after having left Kiel on February 5th to undergo further fit out works and sea trials in Spain. The delivery to her owner, Russian billionaire Andrei Melnichenko is scheduled for late Spring 2017.
Lawyers acting for Nobiskrug have however now filed a claim against the yacht for a breach of contract. The claim indicates that the final €9,8 million installment was not paid by Valla Yachts Limited, the company that owns S/Y A, despite its January 27 deadline stated in the shipbuilding contract.
A further €2,6 million and €2,9 million are being claimed by the shipyard over liability for sub-contractor invoices and disputed orders during the build. The shipyard's total claims therefore amounts to near €15,3 million plus interest. S/Y A was yesterday anchored in the Bay of Gibraltar under the custody of admiralty marshals.
A spokesman for the owner commented:
We find this act of arrest of Sailing Yacht A in Gibraltar an astounding act for a shipbuilder of Nobiskrug's standing. The facts are that with a project of this magnitude there are sometimes outstanding issues to be resolved, and the sum of over 9 million Euros being claimed for payment, by 27th January, was part of ongoing discussions between the Owner and the shipyard in regards to their rectification. We assumed the matter was progressing to a resolution as Nobiskrug were happy to release the yacht on February 5th to the Owner’s project team for further works to be carried out in Spain. The money was paid by the owner the following day into an Escrow account pending a resolution of the discussions. All monies now being claimed are in arbitration and we undestand these disputes fall under arbitration in the UK courts
The spokesman later said that they were confident the arrest will be terminated in the coming days and that this unfortunate episode will be over.
With masts taller than Big Ben at nearly 100 meters in height, S/Y A had managed to reach a top speed of 20 knots without using her sails during her first sea trials. The yacht is projected to have a cruising speed of 16 knots powered by twin MTU engines of 4,827hp each which will give her a transatlantic range of 5,320 nautical miles.
The yacht also boasts a digital control system that has a touch sensitive sheet of black glass, allowing the crew to raise and lower sails and the anchor with a simple swipe according to the Daily Mail. Amongst the yacht's key features is also an underwater observation pod and a large swimming pool with a retractable roof located towards the bow of the yacht.
Philippe Starck, who had also worked on M/Y A, is responsible for the design, whilst the rig and keel were done by Dutch-based Dykstra Naval Architects, with the masts constructed by British firm Magma Structures and the sails by Doyle Sails in the United States. The yacht boasts eight decks and her keel incorporates one of the largest single pieces of curved glass ever made at 193 square feet and weighs a whopping 1.8 tons. S/Y A is expected to be operated by a crew of 54.
When the project for S/Y A was first announced in August 2015, she was first referred to as a sail-assisted motor yacht and can in fact reach up to 20 knots without using her sails as became known during her sea trials. Stretching across a beam of 24.8 meters at her widest point, she comes in at just 3,100GT less than Dilbar, the largest yacht in the world by interior volume.

Italian yacht builder Extra Yachts has revealed the updated interior design of its 32.3-meter X110 Fast model, created by designer Giuseppina Arena. The new interior scheme features contemporary styling with vibrant color palettes, combining leather surfaces, lacquered finishes, and specialized glass elements with integrated fabrics.Constructed with carbon-composite materials, the performance-oriented yacht measures 7.6 meters in beam (extendable to 9 meters with fold-down bulwarks) and draws just 1.35 meters. Power comes from three MAN engines rated at 2,000 horsepower each, enabling a top speed of 40 knots and cruising at 30 knots.The main deck centers around an open-plan saloon with convertible seating arrangements and an integrated bar area. The first 45-meter yacht constructed at Tankoa Yachts' new Civitavecchia production site has completed its transfer to the company's Genoa shipyard. The T450 series vessel arrived via barge after a two-day maritime transport operation, marking a milestone in Tankoa's expansion strategy.Construction of the aluminum hull and superstructure, along with initial machinery installation, was completed at the Civitavecchia facility before the transfer. The logistics operation required transporting the hull by trailer to the quay, loading onto a barge, and final delivery to Tankoa's private docking area in Genoa. The yacht will now undergo final outfitting in preparation for launch.Tankoa has invested approximately €5 million to establish operations at the Civitavecchia site, which obtained its port concession in December 2023. The facility currently employs 120 workers and has five yachts in various construction phases."This transfer demonstrates our long-term commitment to Civitavecchia," stated Tankoa CEO Vincenzo Poerio. The 65-meter motor yacht Regina d'Italia has been listed for sale through Ocean Independence broker Marco Vandoni, marking the first time the vessel has been available since its 2019 delivery from Italian shipyard Codecasa.Constructed with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, Regina d'Italia represents the third iteration of Codecasa's 65-meter platform, offering 1,215 gross tons of interior volume. The yacht's interior design was handled by M2 Atelier in collaboration with an unnamed fashion designer, resulting in minimalist spaces described by brokers as demonstrating "practical elegance."Accommodations include six cabins for up to 11 guests, featuring a 110-square-meter master suite on the main deck. Common areas comprise an open-plan main salon, combined cinema and skylounge, and fully-equipped gymnasium. A central elevator connects all decks.The upper deck aft hosts a formal dining area beneath the mirrored overhang of the sundeck, which itself contains a 7-meter forward-facing pool surrounded by sun loungers and a full-service bar. Spanish builder Maxim Yachts will present its 13-meter Max 43 Comfort daycruiser at the upcoming Cannes Yachting Festival. The yacht features design by Alex Cherigny and naval engineering by Isonaval, constructed with a fiberglass hull reinforced by carbon fiber components in structural areas.The vessel's twin Volvo Penta D6 440 engines deliver a top speed of 45 knots. The carbon fiber hardtop shelters a helm station equipped with dual 16-inch Garmin displays and eleven analog gauges. Below deck, two double cabins provide accommodation, with the forward master cabin offering additional storage space.The main salon contains an L-shaped convertible sofa and a fully-equipped galley with ceramic cooktop, stainless steel sink, and capacity for multiple refrigerators. Teak decking covers all exterior surfaces, including the bow and stern sunbathing areas with removable cushions. Azimut has unveiled its new 38.2-meter Grande Trideck superyacht, marking a design evolution for the Italian builder's flagship series. The vessel features interiors by Milan-based studio m2atelier, implementing their "Barefoot Luxury" concept focused on informal sophistication.The exterior design by Alberto Mancini retains Azimut's characteristic sleek profile while incorporating new elements like a recessed foredeck pool with integrated chaise lounge. The interior architecture emphasizes clean geometries, with straight horizontal and vertical lines creating an expanded sense of space. Diagonal elements appear selectively to establish intimate areas within the open layout.Notable interior features include a signature "Unveiling Wall" in the main salon - a motorized panel of vertical wood slats that slides open to reveal a hidden television. Floor-to-ceiling glazing throughout guest areas maintains visual connections to the seascape.
